Vermicomposting
Hmmmmm...it seems that my homesteading internal clock is all messed up! I USUALLY spend my winters dreaming of coming projects on the OAH...for some reason this summer, I find myself researching while I wait for the veggies and berries to start rolling in. Anywho, I'm thinking that if I can find the right kind of earthworms, I'm going to build my own vermicomposting bin soon. Our Oklahoma clay is desperately in need of enrichment and buying compost gets terribly expensive. I have a regular compost bin, but it takes ages to get fully cooked compost...I'll never get the dark, rich garden soil I so long for at this rate! Soooo...vermicomposting is my next experiment. I reccommend reading "worms eat my garbage." It was oh so helpful when I first got worms. Too bad you don't live closer, I'll be giving away worms in about a month or two, they sure multiply fast! Be sure to get red worms. Definitely start a worm composter though, I used to wait a YEAR for super chunky compost, now I get completely finished compost in just a few weeks! You're gonna love it!
OOOO--I am jealous! I read about vermi-composting all the time (does that make me weird-to dream of worms?) My issue is winter-I think I would need to bring some indoors and I am not sure I am ready for that! Remember that OOOLD TV show WKRP in Cincinati? They had a commercial that was RED WIGGLERS-THE CADILLAC OF WORMS-it gets stuck in my head ALL the time! LOL
When I layer my compost bins I mix in some 3-3-3 organic fertilizer, lime and soil. If you keep it damp, cover it with a tarp and turn the pile occasionally it will compost much quicker. I also mulch the veggies with some of my lawn clippings. That seems to help the soil a lot too.
After close to 20 years of organic gardening in the same spot my soil is like raisin bran. There are two worms in every scoop.
I think you mean, two scoops of worms per box ;)
