Hens...

We bought these two ladies full grown and laying...don't think I'll ever try chicks again! It was so nice to bring them home and have two gorgeous eggs the very next day! I'm not sure of the breeds, but I'd love to hear your input about that. The black one has a beautiful green shimmer to her feathers so the 9 year old named her "Beetle". The white one was named "Feathered Friend" by the 7 year old. They have been champion layers all winter, unlike winters past when we've gone to the nesting box each day to find it empty. They are also very quiet, no loud announcements of new eggs or anything, just those sweet soft clucks of happy hens.

Can't tell for sure, but the one on the left looks like a Black Sex Link, and the one on the right I can't really tell. Here is a list of breeds www.mcmurrayhatchery.com

Is the white one laying white or brown eggs?

They both lay brown eggs, although the black one's eggs are HUGE and the white one lays petite little eggs. :) The white one is also just dying to hatch some chicks. She often sits on the eggs for hours on end. Poor thing, I may have to get her some fertilized eggs just so she can fulfill her mommy nature.

I think the white one is a Columbian Wyandotte. Nice looking birds!

I think your black hen is a Black Australorp, especially with your comment that she has a green sheen to her feathers. I have about twenty hens of this breed and they are great laying hens. In fact, this breed holds the world egg-laying record for both flock and individual hen categories. They're very friendly and docile and good for both meat and eggs. None of my roosters have been aggressive toward me, either. I've been very pleased with my flock.

This looks like two of the girls from my original flock. The white one was sold to me as a brahma. She was a larger bird who laid smaller brown eggs; very friendly and docile. She enjoyed being scratched and would follow us in the yard. We called her Ms.G. The black one looks like our Ms. Pepper but is too large and laies the wrong color eggs.

Looks to me like you have a Black Australorp and a Delaware.
